Sadly, I'm not sure folks tell the truth privately either. Everyone is afraid to offend — except the offenders, who listen selectively and only hear the praise.

I've been mostly off Twitter as of late due to the need for noise reduction, which, for a noise-tolerant person like me, is saying a lot. And when I do jump on these days, I scroll very quickly.

Social is no different than real life; the people who need to hear the message most are convinced it's for others.

I like podcasts too. They are something I listen to only when I'm alone, though, because Jim & I seldom are in the mood for the same thing at the same time. And I like the multitasking aspect as well.

They are actually pretty popular in the church world - I know quite a few folks who listen to missed Sunday sermons or special programs.

While there is no hard and fast criteria (yet) for how to "do" social networking, I do believe that those companies that "get it" approach this new technology as if it were a cocktail party. If they come in and do nothing but talk about the new product / service that they are offering, no one will want to talk to them. If they behave like a type-A asshole (i.e. "Command and Control"), they will not get invited back.

What has seemed to work so far is trying to add a REAL human face to their social networking presence. If a corporate twitter user actually has a conversation with another user, it proves that there IS a person on the other end and not a marketing bot.
